Every day, Venezuelans leave or flee their country on foot, some walking over 3,500 kilometres across the continent to seek refuge. That’s the distance between Quebec City and Calgary.
Can you imagine walking for days, possibly with kids, sleeping outside with no food or proper shelter?
#Together4Venezuelans Walk Campaign
At a time when we face so many misconceptions about refugees and migrants, we’re reminded in Canada and around the world of the real and dangerous journeys they are forced to take. Leading up to the International Donors’ Conference in Solidarity with Venezuelan Refugees and Migrants (June 17) and World Refugee Day (June 20), Global Affairs Canada is asking Canadians and members of the international community to walk in solidarity with Venezuelan migrants and refugees.
How to get involved
It’s simple. Get outside and go for a walk in your own community, respecting local public health guidelines.
You choose the distance. Could you walk just 1% of a Venezuelan’s journey from Caracas to Lima? That’s 44.3 km. How about 1% of the trek from Barquisimeto to Bogotá? That’s 11 km.
Grab some headphones and follow our Spotify playlist as you walk. We’ve put together a collection of testimonies from Venezuelan refugees and migrants and music from the region to accompany you. They’ll tell you why they left and what challenges they faced along the way.
Share a photo, a video or a few words about your walk to show your solidarity with Venezuelans. Post it on your favorite social platform with the hashtag #Together4Venezuelans and encourage others to get involved. Use our stickers and frames to join the campaign.
