Refugee claims based on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression

Refugee claims based on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression (SOGIE) make up 10% of all claims that are the most complex and difficult for the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) to decide.

How does the IRB assess SOGIE claims?

Moreover, what are the common pitfalls that IRB members make when assessing SOGIE claims?

What does the case law and the IRB’s guidelines say about how SOGIE should be assessed?

The Centre for Refugee Studies will answer these questions through a seminar.

The seminar will also discuss the concerns with the determination of SOGIE claims and will suggest recommendations on how to improve decision-making for SOGIE claims.
