All refugees and newcomers are different. Thus, the way(s) sponsorship groups and settlement professionals support each newcomer will also be different. Like the popular saying goes, "no one size fits all". Defining the roles and responsibilities of those involved in supporting newcomers in the settlement process is an important task, albeit a not so straight-forward one.
Some describe the role of a refugee sponsor as that of a "bridge," someone who can advocate for sponsored refugees, provide practical and relational support and offer settlement support in ways that service providers might not be able to due to various constraints. What do you see as being the role of a refugee sponsor in the settlement experience of privately sponsored refugees?
Others describe the role of settlement professionals as being much more technical. Settlement providers and agencies are generally understood to conduct needs assessment, and provide access to information, orientation and referral. What do you see as being the role of service providers in the settlement experience of privately sponsored refugees?
