Afghan human rights defenders arrive in Canada

The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today announced the arrival in Canada of over 250 Afghan refugees, including 170 human rights defenders, as government-assisted refugees. Canada has a long and proud tradition of standing up for human rights at home and abroad. In July 2021, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) launched a human rights defenders immigration stream, making Canada one of the few countries in the world with a dedicated, permanent immigration program for those who protect and promote human rights.

December 2, 2021—Toronto, Ontario—As Canada welcomes Afghan refugees, private sponsors across the country are stepping up. A significant number of Afghan nationals will be arriving as privately sponsored refugees, sponsored by individuals, groups and communities across Canada.

Resettling Afghans who Assisted Canada

The Government of Canada announced that with the situation in Afghanistan deteriorating rapidly, many Afghan nationals that worked with Canada in various capacities over the past ten years have become Taliban targets due to their contributions to Canada’s efforts in Afghanistan.
