Guelph's latest shawarma restaurant owned and operated by Syrian refugees 

Guelph Today - The owners and all the employees at Shawarma.G in the Speedvale Plaza came to Canada as refugees

Seven years ago Walaa Allaf was walking late at night in Downtown Guelph.

Shawarma.G, located in the Speedvale Plaza, is co-owned by Allaf and fellow Syrian refugee Bassam Alkhaledi. All nine employees of the business are also Syrian refugees.

Day camp for refugee kids includes lunch by executive chef

Winnipeg Free Press - In Damascus, where he owned two restaurants, Elias Haddad was the executive chef who didn't do the day-to-day cooking. In Winnipeg, he's back in the kitchen, cooking up a storm for 300 refugee kids every weekday this summer.

On Wednesday, baked chicken was on the menu — one of the favourites of the children and youth at the Kurdish Initiative for Refugees.

Ottawa warns of phone scam targeting immigrants and refugee claimants

RCI Radio Canada International - The Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB) and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre are sounding the alarm bells over a phone scam targeting recent immigrants and refugees particularly in the Greater Toronto and Vancouver areas.

Victims of this scam receive phone calls from people claiming to be representatives of the IRB and are told that they are under investigation and owe money to the government.

Education has the potential to be a healing and empowering process for refugee students. The child-centred spaces of school and classroom are ideally suited to support integration into a new community and help normalize experiences of displacement. Yet educational systems are often ill-equipped to facilitate the transition of students arriving with complex experiences of uprootedness, war, violence, and trauma. So, what strategies and pedagogies can teachers use to ease the transition for refugee students in their schools?
