Canada has announced that the timeline for individual charitable donations to be counted toward the government’s Syria Emergency Relief Fund will be extended until February 29, 2016.

For every eligible dollar donated by individual Canadians to registered Canadian charities in response to the conflict in Syria, the government will continue to set aside one dollar—up to a total of $100 million—to the Fund.

As communities prepare to welcome Syrian refugees in the coming days, weeks, and months, Sherbourne's health care providers are planning and coordinating services to ensure access to appropriate care for refugees upon their arrival; a list of services can be found on their website.

Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) is launching a mobile phone application (app) to help people determine whether they are financially eligible for a legal aid certificate. The app also gives applicants real-time access to call centre wait times.

The Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) provides limited, temporary health coverage for resettled refugees, refugee claimants and certain other groups who are not eligible for provincial or territorial health-care coverage. Eligible individuals receive coverage under the IFHP until they are eligible for provincial or territorial health insurance.

Effective immediately, Syrian claimants who apply for Refugee Protection Division (RPD) coverage will be issued a 10-hour expedite legal aid certificate. The expedite certificate covers the preparation and filing of the Basis of Claim (BoC) and other documents (e.g., submissions) in accordance with the Immigration & Refugee Board’s (IRB) expedited process for Syrian refugee claimants.

To date there are currently 23 primary care sites within the GTA cooperating in offering care tailored to Syrian refugees, with more joining as the days progress. As the numbers of new arrivals grow these Health Services Providers are interested in seeing the refugees, not only because of symptoms they may presently be experiencing, but also as a preventative measure.
