Roundtable: Gender-Based Violence & Racialized Migrant People with Disabilities and Deaf People

OCASI / The Immigrant and Refugee Communities - Neighbours, Friends and Families and the Initiative to End Gender-Based Violence invite you to participate in the upcoming roundtable: Gender-Based Violence & Racialized Migrant People with Disabilities and Deaf People 

This roundtable will shed light on the nature of gender-based violence as experienced by women and gender-diverse people with disabilities and Deaf people in the context of migration and racialization. A panel of subject matter experts and/or those with lived experience will discuss the challenges and best practices that will support non-status, immigrants and refugees, women with disabilities and Deaf women when they attempt to access settlement services.

Panelists:

• Dr. Tammy Bernasky: Assistant Professor in Political Science in the Department of L’nu, Political, and Social Studies at Cape Breton University. She is the author of Working to End Gender-Based Violence in the Disability Community: International Perspectives published by Practical Action Publishing. 
• Dr. Sukaina Dada: founder and Executive Director of SMILE Canada. SMILE is a registered charity organization on a mission to provide support to racialized children and youth with disabilities and their families. Her research and activism focus on the disablement and displacement of Syrian refugees in Canada.
• Ingrid Palmer (she/her): CEO and founder of Focus On Ability, an award-winning speaker, author, social justice consultant, and the Director of Agency Partnerships and Learning at Up with Women. Her dedication to EDI principles is deeply rooted in her lived/living experiences of early childhood trauma, foster care, and gender-based violence. 
• Dr. Doris Rajan: Director of Social Development, Institute for Research and Development on Inclusion and Society (IRIS). Doris has worked for over 20 years as a senior consultant in the non-profit sector, with a focus on gender-based violence, access to justice, the experience of racialization, refugee, immigrant and Indigenous issues and disability justice. 

The roundtable will feature presentations by the four speakers, a moderated discussion, and a Q&A with participants.
