Self-directed course: Understanding and Responding to GBV in Immigrant and Refugee Communities
OCASI / Initiative to End Gender-Based Violence invites you to the upcoming self-directed course: Understanding and Responding to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Immigrant and Refugee Communities.
This six-module online self-directed course is developed to help front-line practitioners working with immigrant and refugee communities to better understand issues of gender-based violence and develop a supportive response for survivors with intersectional identities.
Course Learning Objectives:
After completing this course, you will be able to:
- Explain the importance of using anti-racism, anti-oppression, and intersectional frameworks when supporting immigrants and refugees.
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of violence specific to immigrant and refugee communities.
- Identify and practice applying strategies for responding to disclosures of violence, considering the intersectional needs of diverse immigrant and refugee communities.
- Name specific ways that frontline workers can support immigrant and refugee survivors of GBV at the individual and systemic levels and through community engagement.
- Outline practical strategies for front-line workers to practice self-care and community care and recognize and avoid compassion fatigue.
The course is offered over a 7-week period, to allow participants enough time to complete and receive the certificate. This is self-directed online training, meaning you can go at your own pace and complete the modules whenever you can. Participants will receive access to the course on May 16th at 9:00 AM, which will close on July 4th at 5:00 PM.
