Get Ready for Canada: How SOPA for Refugees Can Help You Prepare

SOPA logo

Are you a privately sponsored refugee waiting for resettlement in Canada? Or maybe you are part of a dedicated sponsorship group working hard to bring a refugee family to Canada. If so, you’ll want to know about the SOPA for Refugees program and how its pre-arrival services can help make a difference.

What is SOPA for Refugees?

SOPA, or Settlement Online Pre-Arrival, is a program funded by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It offers interactive learning and professional development opportunities to people approved to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents but haven’t arrived yet. SOPA for Refugees is a specialized part of SOPA, designed specifically for those waiting to be resettled in Canada through refugee resettlement programs. The SOPA for Refugees program can help bridge the gap between waiting for resettlement and successfully integrating into the Canadian workplace.

Why is the Ready to Work Course Important?

The Ready to Work course is a key part of the SOPA for Refugees program. This course helps you prepare for life and work in Canada by focusing on important topics such as how to search for a job, getting ready for interviews, understanding your rights and responsibilities as an employee, and learning to navigate the written and unwritten rules of Canadian workplaces.

One great thing about the Ready to Work course is its accessibility. You don’t need strong English skills to participate, and you don’t even need a computer. You only need a mobile phone with an internet connection, and you can interact one-on-one with a course facilitator through WhatsApp.

After finishing the Ready to Work course, you’ll receive a certificate of completion, which can be a great addition to your resume. Plus, you can access more SOPA courses and services to help you continue your resettlement journey.
The SOPA for Refugees program is a valuable resource that can help you feel more prepared and confident as you wait to start your new life in Canada. Whether you are waiting for resettlement or supporting someone who is, learning about these services is a step towards a smoother transition to life in Canada.

Learn about one of the Ready to Work clients and what he had to say about finding work in Canada

Alaa fled to Jordan from Iraq and lived for seven years in a refugee camp. He used to work as a banker many years ago. But Alaa left all his important documents behind. However, he believed that he still could find a job in Canada. Before coming to Canada, he joined the 'Ready to Work' program for refugees. He connected with the Employment Counsellor with theSOPA BC team, who guided and supported him through his job search process. Alaa arrived in Canada on October 7th, 2021. He found entry-level work in three weeks and settled in Vancouver.

"Do not wait for your dream job; start on an entry-level job, and this will be the step towards achieving your dream job."
