OCASI Conference: Active Citizenship at the Margins: Civic Engagement in Precarious Times

Visit the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants (OCASI) website

The Journeys to Active Citizenship project, a collaboration between OCASI and the North York Community House (NYCH), invites you to join our virtual conference: Active Citizenship at the Margins: Civic Engagement in Precarious Times

About the event:

Through a variety of panels and breakout rooms, we will highlight examples of Active Citizenship by discussing actions, programming, and groups that are organizing and mobilizing around difficulties that immigrant, migrant, and refugee communities face. This conference will show what a community of practice can look like. It is a chance to share stories, successes, and challenges by creating a collaborative space to address important issues and support immigrants, migrants and refugees in their journeys as active citizens.

Panel Spotlight: Accessing Justice as a form of Active Citizenship

Attend this panel to learn about the important work being done by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA), Canadian Civil Liberties Education Trust (CCLET), and Community Legal Education Ontario (CLEO) in empowering newcomers through rights education and community engagement. Panelists will discuss what access to justice means and how it supports active citizenship. They will also address what frontline workers need to know about barriers to accessing legal rights.

Speakers:

  • Nat Paul is the Director of Education for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and Canadian Civil Liberties Education Trust.
  • Iqra Rafique is a lawyer and Public Legal Education Curriculum Developer and Trainer at Community Legal Education Ontario (CLEO).
  • Helen Anderson is the Director of CLEO Connect. Her role focuses on providing legal information, training, and resources to community workers who assist people with law-related problems.
