What services can I get at the public library if I'm a newcomer?

The public library is a place where you can research, read, borrow resources, access the internet, and find services to help you settle in Ontario.

What can I do at the library ?

Here are some programs and services you might find at your local public library:

  • Improve your English and French language skills (through books and conversation groups).
  • Access articles, books, and music in your language.
  • Join book clubs for different age groups.
  • Participate in activities for young children and their caregivers.
  • Check if your local library has a settlement worker and connect with them to access services for newcomers.
  • Join homework clubs for students and educational summer programs.
  • Attend programs for seniors.
  • Participate in workshops on employment, health, personal finance, digital literacy, and more.
  • Free access to the internet and Wi-Fi.
  • Access multimedia equipment and other technologies.
  • Use paid services like printers, scanners, photocopiers, and fax machines.
  • Access services for people with disabilities.

Libraries often provide comfortable spaces to read, study, or work. You may need to book a workspace or room if the library is busy.

Library Settlement Partnerships (LSP)

The LSP program offers newcomers settlement services directly in libraries in certain Ontario locations (Brampton, Hamilton, Kitchener, London, Markham, Ottawa, Richmond Hill, Toronto, Vaughan, Waterloo, and Windsor).

Services include individual information and referral sessions, group information sessions, and community connections. Staff from various settlement organizations work in library branches, offering services in multiple languages based on community needs. These services are free.

How do I find a public library?

Ontario has an extensive network of public libraries. You can find a list of public libraries in alphabetical order on the Ontario government website.

How do I get a library card?

If you live, work, or go to school in the library's service area, you can usually get a membership card for free. You will need to present an ID confirming your name and address, such as a rental lease, driver's license, or utility bill.

If you're not eligible for a free card, you may be able to sign up with a small annual fee.
