Neighbours Friends and Families IRCNFF

OCASI - Neighbours, Friends and Families (IRCNFF) cordially invites you to participate in the upcoming webinar: Decolonizing Gender-Based Violence: Indigenous Perspectives on Racial Capitalism, Patriarchy, and Colonialism

About the event

This educational session highlights the historical and ongoing roles of Indigenous mothers and the divergence of Indigenous gender relations from Eurocentric norms. Join us in challenging Eurocentric frameworks by centering Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and leading.

Key Objectives:

  • Gain insights into how colonial histories impact Indigenous communities today and learn strategies to provide support that respects and integrates Indigenous knowledge, cultural practices, and perspectives.
  • Understand the role of decolonization in addressing gender-based violence and learn how to work in partnership with Indigenous communities to promote healing, empowerment, and systemic change.

Facilitator:

Miriam Nowling. Indigenous graduate student currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Critical Sociology at Brock University. She holds an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a concentration in Criminology and a minor in Psychology. Now in her second year, Miriam is writing her thesis while serving as both a teaching assistant and research assistant at Brock University. Her work focuses on how Indigenous men’s identities and roles are created through language and portrayed in the media, a critical discourse analysis to reveal the underlying power dynamics that are spoken, written, and media within Indigenous men’s lives. Emphasizing its systemic roots tied to colonialism, patriarchy, and racial capitalism. She explores Indigenous gender ideologies, decolonization, and the cultural impact of language. She advocates for decolonization as a pathway to healing, education, and reclaiming Indigenous knowledge through frameworks like Two-Eyed Seeing, which integrates Indigenous and Western perspectives.
