The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) indicates an increase in resettlement needs for 2024 compared to 2023.
The UNHCR’s Projected Global Resettlement Needs Assessment for 2024 indicates that over 2.4 million refugees will need resettlement, a 20 percent increase from 2023.
- Nearly 730,000 refugees in Asia will require resettlement, making up 30% of global needs.
- Syrian refugees continue to have the greatest need for resettlement for the eighth year in a row, with around 754,000 people worldwide in need of urgent help through resettlement.
- Afghan refugees have the second-highest needs, followed by those from South Sudan, Myanmar, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
According to the last Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) Indicator Report from the UNHCR, as of July 2023, more than 43,600 refugees had departed for resettlement. Between January and September 2023, the UNHCR referred over 112,000 refugees for resettlement, including 80% women and children.
